According to Hidalgo County Elections Department records, in 2008, the last major primary election, close to 6,000 people participated in the first day of early voting.
There are several local contested races in the state primary, which will be held May 29.
The seat for U.S. Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison’s seat has four candidates. They are Paul Sadler, Grady Yarbrough, Sean Hubbard and Addie Dainell Allen.
District 15 U.S. Rep. Ruben Hinojosa is seeking re-election against Democratic candidates Ruben Ramon Ramirez, Johnny “JP” Partain, David Cantu and Jane Cross.
Texas House of Representatives District 35, a newly created House seat has two Democratic candidates, Oscar Longoria and Gus Ruiz.
District judge in the 389th Judicial District candidates are Alma Garza and Letty Lopez.District judge in the 398 Judicial District candidates are Aida Salinas Flores and Fidencio Guerra Jr.
Hidalgo County Court-at-Law No. 7, the county’s newest court has three candidates, Nereyda Morales-Martinez, David Saenz and Sergio Valdez.
Hidalgo County Sheriff Lupe Treviño is seeking re-election with a single Democratic challenger in Geovani Hernandez.
Four people are vying to replace Hidalgo County Democratic Chair Dolly Elizondo-Garcia who is not seeking re-election. The candidates are John Peña, Michael Barnes, Fernando Castillo and Kelly Rivera Salazar.
The seat for U.S. Senator in the Republican Party has nine candidates. They are David Dewhurst, Ben Gambini, Tom Leppert, Lela Pittenger, Craig James, Curt Cleaver, Glenn Addison, Joe Agris and Ted Cruz.
Justice candidates for the 13th Court of Appeals District Place 4 are Jaime Tijerina and Bradford M. Condit.
Javier Villalobos is seeking re-election as the local Republican chairman against Tom Haughey.
There are 25 early voting sites across the county. Locally, there are seven locations.
In Mission sites include Mission City Hall, 1201 E. 8th St. and Fire Station No. 3, 1804 N. Shary Rd.
Other sites include: Alton City Hall, 509 S. Alton Blvd., La Joya City Hall, 101 N. Leo Ave., Church of Christ, 1401 E. 3 Mile Rd. in Palmhurst, Hidalgo County Commissioner Precicnt 3, 724 N. Breyfogle Rd. between Palmview and Mission and the Sullivan City Fire Station, 500 Cenizo Dr.
Voting hours are from 7 a.m.-7 p.m. except on Sunday, May 20 when voting is held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
