MISSION – Sharyland School Board approved requests for additional personnel at several schools during this week’s board meeting. Most of the personnel were requested because of increasing enrollment numbers at the high school.
More staffing was also requested to help with new testing practices that will be fully implemented next year. The hiring of three testing strategists, an administrative position, was approved for the high school and both junior highs.
The board also approved hiring a physical therapist. The school district expects to save money by having a therapist on the payroll instead of paying for outside services.
Agriculture Building Update
The board rejected a bid on Package B for the Agriculture Building. The package calls for an addition and small office space with lockers. Original budget for the project was set at $400,000. Bids received were over $700,000.
Total budget projected for the entire Agriculture Building project, which includes renovating the existing 18,500 feet with new foundation, pins and drainage and plumbing improvements, is $850,000.
The board is still going through applications for a new superintendent. Board President Dr. Noe Oliveira said no details can be given right now, but they are still going through applications. The board will meet Saturday to review applications and possibly conduct interviews.
They have not selected any finalist, said Oliveira, but they do need to hire someone by mid-June. The goal is to have a new superintendent by July. The candidate should be announced at least 21 days before the first of July, when the new contract date begins.
In other items, the school board approved to continue an agreement with Valley Metro Security for campus security services and to renew canine services with Interquest Detection Canines.
In regards to the canines that are taken to the high school at least three times a week, Board Member Fernando Ramirez, said the board needed to look at their entire drug policy for students and staff in the future.blog comments powered by Disqus
