Rep. Aaron Peña Expresses Condolences for Slain ICE Special Agent

20110218_ICE-Agent-Jaime-Zapata(Austin, TX) -- Another tragic death occurred Tuesday as U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Special Agent, Jaime Zapata, was attacked and killed by gunmen at a drug trafficking checkpoint between Monterrey and Mexico City. His partner, Victor Avila, was wounded in the attack and was sent back to the United States.  "Our thoughts and prayers go out to these two brave men and their families for this savage attack," remarked Rep. Peña.

Rep. Peña continued, "I echo the sentiments of Gov. Perry in his call for Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano to assign an additional 3,000 agents to patrol the border. The level of violence continues to increase and despite our state efforts to combat this immense problem through the use of advanced communications and tactical equipment, the establishment of joint operation and intelligence centers, the creation of quick-response units, and additional aviation assets the protection and security of the border remains a federal responsibility."

Rep. Peña concluded by reinforcing the seriousness of the threat to the state of Texas. "Texans are a proud and resourceful people who are willing to address problems head on but drug cartels and transnational gangs are spilling over the border into Texas prisons, our schools, and our communities with the promise of quick and easy money. We have spent more than $200 million over the last several years while Washington provides scant assistance to the state that has nearly two thirds of the of the entire length of the border with Mexico. There can be no national security without border security."

Rep. Peña serves as chairman of the House Committee on Technology, as a member of the Committee on Homeland Security and Public Safety, the Committee on Redistricting and the Select Committee on Voter Identification and Voter Fraud.
