The Mission Historical Museum is hosting a not-so-traditional shindig this Saturday from 4 to 7 p.m. for the opening of their newest exhibit, “That’s Entertainment! Movies, Music and More from the Past in Mission.”

The special party features live music by Trio Nuevo Amanecer, Carlos Guzman and renowned singer and musician Mario Saenz. The nostalgia will be sprinkled with popcorn and Cokes at throwback prices, food vendors and a preview tour of the new exhibit designed by Maria Hurtado.

“In a time before computers, video on demand, or MP3 players, the citizens of Mission had to leave their homes to find entertainment,” said Casandra Karl, MHM director. “Although…a small community at that time, venues for movies, music and other diversions were prolific, and people had a lot to choose from when it came to entertainment.”

The exhibit pays tribute to classic movies and movie theaters the Rio, the Rex, the Mission, the Border and the Buckhorn Drive-in with historic images and movie posters.

Including Saenz, Mission has had its share of notable musicians such as violinist Gorgonio Barrera, composer Rafael Ramirez and Grammy winner Carlos Guzman. They will all be featured in the exhibit.

Saenz stopped by the museum on a recent visit and gave an impromptu performance of “Toda Una Vida” for the MHM staff. Go to www.progresstimes.net to find a link to the video.

Other entertainment diversions receiving attention include Mitla, Mission’s only dance hall, KIRT radio station, baseball games, picnics and more.

It will be on display through September 15 in the MHM main building, 900 Doherty Ave.

MHM is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday. Admission is free, but donations are accepted.
