Sharyland High School students took top honors in the Students Taking Action with Recognition (STAR) event competition at the recent Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) State Conference in Dallas. Three of Sharyland’s teams were named state champions and will advance to the national competition in July.
Taking first place as a team in Chapter Showcase Manual, senior, were Andrea Salazar, Marifer Valdez and Laila Kalaf. State champion Environmental Ambassador senior team members were Genoveva Jaimes, Jackie Luke and Edeliz Perez. State champs in Parliamentary Procedure, senior team, wereMaria E. Garza, Myriam Garza, Natalia Gonzalez, Anthony Jimenez, Sylvia Ponce, Marisa Rodriguez, Isaac Rosales and Carlos Valdez.
The Advocacy team from SHS, consisting of Karla Montemayor, Camila Da’Conceicao and Kaylee Cross, earned fourth place at the competition. Three individual students from the SHS chapter won second place in their events: Andrea Perez, Fashion Design; Evelyn Cantu, Leadership; and Brenda Guizar, Teach and Train Senior, national qualifier
Sharyland team advisors are: Mary Jane Laing, Advocacy, Chapter Showcase Manual, and Leadership teams; Norma Meza, Fashion Design and Environmental Ambassador teams; and Mary Jo Brisnahan, Parliamentary Procedure and Teach and Train teams.
Carlos Cruz, junior, was selected as one of two FCCLA National Officer candidates for the State of Texas. He will compete in Florida, at the National Leadership Conference this July with his advisor Mrs. Brisnahan.
The students also took the Leadership Enhancement Opportunity (LEO) proficiency exams and earned outstanding recognition, including 17 gold, six silver and one participant awards.
The Sharyland FCCLA Chapter was selected as having the “Best FCCLA Week” over all the chapters of Texas. The Sharyland Chapter also received recognition for the following projects: STOP the Violence, FACTS, Community Service, Career Connection and Student Body.
Sharyland also earned the "The News Across Texas" award for the fifth consecutive year, as the state officers recognized the chapter that submitted the most articles to national and state FCCLA headquarters. Advisor for Public Relations and News is Mrs. Laing.
Laing stated, "It is an honor to be the best FCCLA news reporting team in Texas for five years in a row. The FCCLA students are well educated here in writing here at SHS and I have enjoyed advising them."
