PALMVIEW – Palmview Police Department recently acquired a new Skywatch mobile surveillance tower. They will now be able to watch areas from 30 feet above the ground.
Skywatch is a mobile elevated surveillance tower with cameras that can watch an area 24/7. The tower can reach a height of 45 feet, but because of South Texas winds, it will probably not be raised more than 30 feet, said Palmview code enforcement officer David Nacianceno.
He said Skywatch is another safety measure the city is implementing to help deter crime.
The tower costs between $120,000 to $160,000. It includes four cameras that can be set to focus on certain areas and one camera that is constantly rotating. The tower can be manned by one individual or left empty. When manned, an officer will have a portable radio to report crimes taking place or let other officers know of an area of concern.
When the tower is unmanned, it is constantly recording. The recordings can then be downloaded and used for any investigations that may come up.
The police department intends to purchase another Skywatch in the next two years.
