Paul Rodriguez appointed to STC Board of Trustees

MCALLEN — The South Texas Board of Trustees unanimously selected on July 24 Valley Land Title Company president and CEO, Paul R. Rodriguez, to replace the late Michael Allen, who died after a long battle with cancer in 2010.

Allen represented south McAllen, southwest Pharr, Hidalgo, Sharyland, southeast Mission and Granjeno in District 3 since May 2004. Rodriguez will serve out Allen’s term, which ends in May 2016.

Rodriguez said he appreciates the board’s confidence in him.

“I know you had an excellent group of candidates to select from, so I certainly appreciate the responsibility you have given me,” he said.

Rodriguez and Dr. Ofelia Averack, a McAllen physician, were the two finalists considered by the board from a list of 13 individuals from District 3 who had been nominated to the board, which governs major campuses in McAllen, Weslaco and Rio Grande City.

Last August, the STC Board of Trustees approved a one-year, $138.5 million budget, and might consider a major bond election for expansion plans of the fast-growing institution of higher education.

From 1999 through 2008, Rodriguez served as the past president and member of the Sharyland Independent School District Board of Trustees, served as board member of the Mission Economic Development Authority, 1989 through 1999, continues to serve as Chairman and board member of the Municipal Utility District No. 1, 1988 through the present, and is a former Chairman and board member of Mission Hospital, 1985 through 2000.

He listed as his three references for the position Congressman Ruben Hinojosa, D-Mercedes, Keith Patridge, President and CEO for the McAllen Economic Development Corporation, and Jesse Muñiz, the Assistant Superintendent for the Sharyland Independent School District.
