BrunsonMISSION – Sharyland High School Leo Club hosted a Back-to-school Family Festival last Friday to raise funds for scholarships that will be given out in the spring. Club members, visitors and other participants were having a roaring good time during the event.

The Family Festival featured a food competition, moon jumps, face painting, a photo booth, cakewalk, bull riding, rock wall, dunking booth and many other activities for visitors. There was also live entertainment provided by local talents, including Sharyland High School cheerleaders and dancers. Local sponsors were also at the event providing information to visitors.

Leo Club sponsor Julissa Sanchez said after last year’s success with the scholarships, they set a higher goal this year, which was nearly achieved. The group raised over $2,000 with just the money they collected at the booths, not counting sponsor donations. Last year, the group raised about $1,800 and was able to give out three scholarships.

BrunsonSanchez said with more being raised this year, they will either give out three larger scholarships, or six smaller scholarships to qualified applicants. Raising money for the scholarships we are able to bring everyone together to support higher education, she said.

The Leo Club is a community outreach organization, sponsored by the Lions Club of Mission, that helps meet the needs of the community. Sanchez said, if they recognize a need, they will find a way to help.

The group had over 40 members last year, and Sanchez said the group has more than doubled this year.

Last year, the group participated in projects such as collecting eyeglasses for the visually impaired, raising money for the Rio Grande Valley Food Bank, a 5K run to raise money for scholarships, collecting money to purchase socks for needy children, and a drive to collect jeans for needy kids and teenagers. Some members helped at the Personal Energy Transportation (PET) Project building wheeled carts for people that have lost the use of their legs.

Besides the usual projects, the group also plans to help out the Diabetes association and have a shoe drive to provide shoes to impoverished kids.

Sanchez said she is very proud of the students. They really want to offer something to those that may not have the things they need.

Something small can go a long way and we know people are in need, she continued.

“That’s what community is all about,” said Sanchez. “I know God wants us to do so much more.”
