Progress Times photo by Luciano GuerraColors were flowing across the football field as color guard members performed alongside over 20 marching bands last Saturday during the annual Pigksin competition at McAllen High School. La Joya, Palmview, and Sharyland High School bands earned a Division I rating, earning them a chance to compete in the area competition being held in Laredo this weekend.

Over 40 bands will be competing at the Area G Marching Contest in Laredo. The competition will be held at the Bill Johnson Student Activity Center. Bands earning a ranking at the area competition will be able to compete at the state level next month in San Antonio.

Sharyland High School band performed “The Journey,” a composition by Belgian composer Jan Van Der Roost. During one part of the performance, band members lay on the ground, showing how their journey got up so far and then came down again. This is where the journey picks back up again and builds up to the end of the performance.

SHS band has received a Division I rating every year at the UIL Pigskin competition since 1994. During those years, they have competed once at the state level.

Sharyland will perform at 4:45 p.m., Saturday.

La Joya Coyote Band show is entitled “Carmen.” “Carmen” is an opera that was composed by the French composer George Bizet. The music has numerous Latin overtones with beautiful lyrical lines.

This will mark the 15th consecutive year the LJHS band has received a Division I and advanced to the area competition. They have made four UIL state marching band appearances since 1998.

The band will perform Saturday at 12 p.m.

Palmview High School Band’s production is entitled “The Conquest of the Aztec Empire.” The show music is an original commissioned piece written for the PHS band by composer John Meehan. The show is comprised of three movements.

Movement one, “Rise of the Sun,” depicts the morning ritual and praise of the Aztec Gods. Movement two, “Rituals,” depicts lively dancing as the Gods are praised for the blessing the Aztec nation has received. Movement three, “Preparing for War and Finale,” portrays the defeat of the Aztec nation by the Spanish Conquistadors.

PHS band also received the Sweepstakes award at the Pigskin competition. The band will perform Saturday at 11 a.m.

Admission to the contest is $5 and is open to the public.

Both Mission high school bands and Juarez-Lincoln High Band received Division II.
