PEÑITAS—The Peñitas 2nd Annual Christmas Posada and Toy Giveaway is not like your average toy distribution; the city has competitions, food, toys and games fit for the whole family. The posada is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 8, from 4 to 9 p.m. at the Peñitas City Park.

The Peñitas White Wing Festival board handles the planning of all social events for the city. President of the board, Homer Tijerina, said the Posada is an event put together by the city with the help of the Peñitas Public Library and the Peñitas Police Department.

“We are going to have live music, bands from La Joya Independent School District, food, drinks, hay rides, moon jumps and a playground,” Tijerina said.

Performances from the Silver Bullet Band, Grupo Folklorico Ozomatli, La Tradicion, Palmview High School Band, Palmview Choir and La Revancha are scheduled through out the event.

Younger children, up to the age of 12, will have the opportunity to play in the moon jump and participate in activities for their age range. Six bikes (three boys and three girls) will also be raffled off to this age group.

“We will have different games for kids from ages 13 to 18,” Tijerina said. “We will have a small basketball tournament, football and soccer competitions. We will also be raffling off two iPod shuffles for this age group.”

Among these activities, the tree lighting ceremony will be hosted by the Peñitas White Wing Festival Royal Court and lit by the queen. Tijerina added a Christmas home decorating contest winner will be awarded at the Posada. First place will receive a plaque and $100; second and third places will receive plaques as well.

Santa Claus will also be part of the Christmas bash from 6 to 9 p.m.; he will help distribute the 760 toys purchased by the city.

“Toys were purchased through all of the events we have had all year, the White Wings Festival in September helped a lot,” Tijerina said. “Everyone from the city is welcome to join us.”

Parents are advised to bring a bill or type of identification that states they are a resident from Peñitas in order for their children to receive a gift.
