Several area Future Farmers of America students placed at a recent State FFA Leadership Development Event (LDE) in Huntsville. The students first had to place in their division and area before competing at the state level.
The Leadership Development competition featured students competing individually and as teams in a variety of areas such as agricultural advocacy, agricultural issues forum, chapter conducting, creed speaking, greenhand (first year) and senior FFA quiz, FFA radio, job interview, public relations, and skills demonstration. According to the Texas FFA Association LDE website, the events focus on creating situations for members to demonstrate their abilities in public speaking, decision making, communication and knowledge of agriculture and the FFA organization.

The students had to present an informative radio program covering one or more agricultural subjects that is current in nature and local in content.
The Junior Skills Demonstration team placed third in state along 231 teams competing. The students on the team are Baudel Ponce, Justin Bryan, and Seth Carter. Out of 316 teams competing, SHS’s Public Relations team placed seventh. Team members are Shane Carter, David Trevino, Kimberly Chaves and Melanie San Roman. Team members had to develop and present a five- to eight-minute program to inform a specified target audience, a community service organization for this competition, regarding the Texas FFA and what it represents. The presentation is developed assuming that the target audience has no knowledge of the FFA. Team members are then asked questions in response to their program following the presentation.
