MISSION—The University of Phoenix in Mission, along with the help of IBC Bank, the Mission Chamber of Commerce and National Hispanic Professional Organization (NHPO) assisted the Mission Boys and Girls Club in upgrading their tech room on Dec. 6.
Ten refurbished computer screens and towers were given to the facility along with new books and school supplies that members could use. Boys & Girls Club Director J.C. Avila said the new computers would not only assist children with schoolwork but also with awareness programs.
“The computers will help us with National Boys and Girls Club programs,” Avila said. “We will use the computers for programs about tobacco use, alcohol awareness and safety when on the Internet.”
Avila added the computers were also going to be a great outlet for student’s creativity with arts projects.
Around 40 new books were part of the donation, as well as boxes filled with pencils, paper, folders, notebooks, books and other school supplies.
Mikal Powers, University of Phoenix campus director, explained these kinds of additions could not happen without the assistance of local businesses.
“All the supplies were a community effort. Their mission statement is to develop the youth for tomorrow and that is what we believe in,” Powers said. “When we first opened up our campus in Mission…we wanted to build a partnership with the Boys and Girls Club because that is where our students live.”
Jesse DeLeon, NHPO Chairman of the RGV Chapter, said they have always enjoyed partnering up with other organizations to provide supplies for children in the community. The chairman was happy to see the joy on the children’s faces, as members posed for pictures with their new supplies.
The University of Phoenix has had a relationship with Boys and Girls Clubs across the country for many years, Powers explained, and works to keep the bond strong.blog comments powered by Disqus
