MISSION – Mission Police Chief Martin Garza said one of his police officers has been terminated after being charged with driving while intoxicated (DWI).
Mission police arrested Randy Garza about 7:15 a.m. Sunday after being called out to where his vehicle had struck a mailbox. Randy Garza was off duty at the time.
At the scene, officers noticed signs of intoxication. Randy Garza refused field sobriety tests and was arrested for suspicion of DWI. He was released the same day on a personal recognizance bond.
The police officer was officially charged with a DWI Monday afternoon, according to police.
Immediately following the arrest, Randy Garza was suspended with pay. The police chief said this was to give the department adequate time to complete an administrative investigation.
On Tuesday, Jan. 29, Garza was given an indefinite suspension for violation of city and departmental policies and civil service laws. Indefinite suspension is equivalent to termination.
Randy Garza had been with the department about two and one-half years.
