20130222 MISSION CAR SHOW JB 0027The much-anticipated 10th Annual Mission Classic Car Show will be held Saturday, Feb. 23, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Mission Sports Park, located in The Grove at Sharyland Plantation. Over $5000 in cash and prizes will be given away to the winners in five different categories.

While pre-registration is closed, car buffs can still register their cars the day of the show. “Just come over to the registration tent and sign up,” said Mindy Schroeder, show chairman. Registration is free, as is show admission and parking.

This show has grown rapidly to become one of the largest car shows in South Texas. An estimated 10,000 to 15,000 people attend this car show each year. And the show typically draws over 250 classic car entries from several states.

“We have cars coming in from Victoria, San Antonio, Corpus Christi, Laredo, Medina, Rio, and Hutto, Texas, as well as Monterrey and Reynosa, Mexico,” said Schroeder. “We also have 12-15 Winter Texans who tell me they brought their cars down to the Valley this year just to be in this show.”

The classic cars and trucks will be divided into five categories: Classic, Hot Rod/Custom, Street Rod/Custom, Muscle Car, and Specialty Class. And lots of awards, including cash prizes and trophies will be given out.

First, second and third place will be awarded in all categories. Memorial awards will include the Greg Cassity Award for Outstanding Muscle Car, Jim Best Award for Outstanding Modified, and Carl Johnson Award for Outstanding Ford. Other prizes include Mayor’s Choice, Exhibitors’ Choice, Best Lowrider, Best Paint, Best Flames, Best Engine Compartment, Best Interior, Long Distance Travel, Outstanding Truck, Outstanding Foreign Car and Most Unique.

The public gets to vote for the Ladies’ Choice and Kids’ Choice Awards.

“We have two new awards this year,” Schroeder said. “The Jim Schroeder Award will be for Outstanding Mopar and the Manny Abrego Award will be for Best Custom.

“You don’t have to have a trailer queen car to be in this show,” she added. The show gives out many awards in addition to first, second and third place in each division. “If a car has Bondo and is still being worked on, it still has a chance to win something. Just bring your ’76 or older car and let’s have some fun.”

Long time Valley radio personality Robert Ceballos will be on hand to emcee the show and play classic hits from the 50's and 60's. At the Winter Texan tent, Winter Texans can register for prizes to be given away every hour, such as rounds of golf, gift certificates to Mission restaurants and much more. Need not be present to win.

“In addition, we will be selling tickets for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation prize giveaway. Best Buy has donated a Beats by Dre headphone set that will be given away during the Great Strides Walk in March.  And lots of vendors will be at the show selling food and fun items,” Schroeder said.

Set up and sign-in for exhibitors begins at 9 a.m. and cars must be in place by noon to be eligible for $5000 in cash and prizes, according to Schroeder. Winners will be announced at 4:30 p.m.

Mission Sports Park is located at The Grove at Sharyland Plantation, 3930 Plantation Grove Blvd., in Mission, 2.2 miles south of Expressway 83 on Shary Rd.
