20130308 Star-Livestock-Show LEG0200 featureIn a highly competitive STAR (South Texas Agricultural Roundup) Show, Sharyland FFA and Sharyland 4-H again brought home more trophies for grand champion and reserve grand champion than any other FFA or 4-H group. But it was Edinburg Vela FFA that captured both Supreme Bull and Supreme Heifer.

The 10th annual STAR Livestock Show, held Feb. 27-Mar. 2 at Edinburg Municipal Park, had 669 youth participating from area FFA and 4-H groups, entering 827 projects in the competition. Premiums awarded for the projects totaled over $314,900.

Sharyland FFA advisor Joe Carter said, “It’s a great show. It gives our kids an opportunity to compete here in the county and get rewarded for their work. These kids put a lot of time and effort into it, and sometimes this is their only hurrah.

“It’s always fun to win,” he added, “but that’s not the purpose. The purpose is to teach these kids and build them…into young adults that will be able to do what we’re doing, hopefully, someday.”

Sharyland FFA had three grand champions, one reserve grand champion and five breed champions, while Sharyland 4-H had two grand champions, two reserve grand champions and one breed champion.

Edinburg Vela FFA and Linn Manuel 4-H were also among the top winners. Vela had two grand champions, one reserve and three breed champions – one more than Sharyland 4-H, but one less reserve champion. Linn San Manuel produced two grand champions and one breed champion.

Representing Sharyland FFA at the show, grand champion winners were Desiree Rangel for market steer, Marco Rivera for market hog, and Tyler Kelley and David Treviño in the Ag Mechanics Home and Garden Division. Tyler and David constructed a king-size bed and bedroom set, including armoire and night stands, made of oak.

Sharyland FFA reserve grand champion was Marshall Curl for breeding heifer.

Sharyland 4-H grand champions were Alexandra Longoria, market lambs and Reece Teplicek, poultry, while reserve grand champions were Syanne Escobar, market steer and Tyler Kelley, poultry.

Mission Veterans Memorial FFA’s Zenaida Alaniz captured reserve grand champion for her market goat.

Other Mission-area youth winning reserve grand champion awards for their projects were Gilbert Lopez, Juarez-Lincoln FFA, market lamb; Joe Montemayor, Cactus Country 4-H, breeding bull; and Alyssa Gamboa, Palmview FFA, breeding gilts.

The five breed champion exhibitors from Sharyland FFA include Luis Garcia, Simbrah market steer; Teah Barrientes, ABC market steer; Emily Keller, Duroc market hog; Marexy Guerra, OPB breeding gilts; and Seth Carter, Light Cross breeding gilts.

Dennika Uribe, from Sharyland 4-H, showed a breed champion market goat, as did Meagan Garrett, of Veterans Memorial FFA.

Ashly Bell, of Juarez-Lincoln FFA, had the ABC Comm breeding heifer champion.

Sharyland FFA also had five reserve breed champion exhibitors, including Clyte Best, Awbrey Long, Shane Carter, Valeria Eaves and Omar Carrasco.

Other local reserve breed champion exhibitors include Robert Welch, Sharyland 4-H; Raymond Mueller, Veterans Memorial; Hiram Ibanez, Palmview FFA; Jose Angel Villlarreal, Palmview FFA; and Ashlyn Montemayor, La Joya FFA.

Show President Mike Yarbrough said, “The show went wonderfully well this year. We set records pretty much in all categories… in the number of exhibitors that were entered, in the total number of animal projects that were entered.” He said the show also set a record for show premiums paid out. Last year’s premiums paid totaled $253,640, including $10,000 in showmanship awards money donated each year by the Guerra Brothers.
