MISSION—Mission CISD held a committee meeting to discuss possible safety and security costs in upgrading each campus in the district, including the administration building. Assistant Superintendent for Finance and Operations Lucio Mendoza showed the committee proposed costs and purchases for the proposed campus security enhancements.
Principals were asked to fill out a report of any issues and concerns they have relative to their campuses, explained Mendoza. He added, they don’t have reports from the high schools or Mission Jr. High since a walk-through with Mission Police Department has not yet been conducted.
The most common concerns were based on entrances, fencing and rolling gates. Mendoza said their main focus has been on the purchase of magnetic locks. Magnetic locks would stay locked throughout the school day and only open while students change from class to class.
“What it amounts to, to upgrade to magnetic locks we are looking at $180,000, excluding the high schools and Mission Jr. High.” Mendoza said. “We are also looking at having wireless panic buttons…$87,000 district wide.”
Mendoza came up with an estimated grand total of almost $1.8 million in upgrades. This amount covers rolling gates, security panel upgrade, panic wireless buttons, strobe lights, intercom systems, cameras and door security systems.
Board member Patty Bazaldua voiced her concerns with individuals being able to get on campus; she said she would like to see a way to funnel guests directly to the front office. Mendoza explained specific walls have to be built in order to make those plans materialize, which are in the district’s plans, but will take longer to produce.
“There are some items that are less than $50,000 that we can make a move on. Some of them are not. So, we have to go through the bidding process,” Mendoza said. “Just to go up for bids we are looking at two months.”
The district hopes to have 90 percent of the upgrades complete before the next school year. Mendoza also said a detailed walk-through with the Mission Police Department is planned in the near future.
At a workshop held on Jan. 30, teachers from Mission High School brought up concerns with the campus’ intercom system that failed them during a lockdown. Mendoza said a new IP Intercom System would be used to solve the intercom problem.
Another security project in the planning stage includes silent trigger alarms for each classroom.
The purchase of security items will be placed on the agenda of the next regular school board meeting scheduled for March 20 for approval.
