20110408_MPD_Arraignment_Vanessa-Garcia_CAB_0008MISSION — Mission police arrested a 28-year-old Mission woman on Monday in connection with her husband’s death in a 2010 home invasion.

Vanessa Garcia was charged Wednesday with capital murder. Her husband, Reyes Garcia, died from four gunshot wounds during a home invasion and robbery on June 23, 2010, police said.

Three other suspects were charged in June and one has a warrant for his arrest.

According to the probable cause affidavit, Garcia contacted a man offering him $20,000 to kill her husband. Roel Cantu, the man who was offered the money in the plot, contacted authorities on April 1.

Cantu told police that his girlfriend, Graciela Arjona, and her sister, Vanessa Garcia, planned the attack. He told authorities he originally withheld the information because his girlfriend was pregnant and he did not want her to have his baby in jail.

On Thursday, after press time, police said they arrested Arjona and charged her with capital murder.

The affidavit also states that Antonio Mendez, who has a warrant out for his arrest, was contacted first and then was introduced to Jeffrey “El Dragon” Juarez. The three of them agreed to rob the victim and split the money and guns in the house.

Juarez, Cantu, Ricardo Sanchez Muñoz, and Ezequiel “Angel” Falcon were all charged with capital murder and engaging in organized criminal activity. Juarez is in federal custody facing other charges for previous gang-related crimes. The others are in Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Jail. Police said Mendez may be in Mexico.

MPD said they were able to contact Arjona who also provided a statement implicating her sister and provided her cellphone that contained saved text messages from her sister.

Garcia is being held on a $500,000 bond. If found guilty, she could face life in prison or death. The mother of four is a stay-at-home mom.

On Wednesday, MPD spokesman Sgt. Jody Tittle said the home invasion was not a random act of violence. He said Garcia portrayed herself as a victim and was always cooperative with the police. She was taken into custody this week after authorities told her they needed another interview on the case.

“What started off as rumors, ended up turning up more evidence against her and unfortunately for her children, she ended up implicated and we got probable cause to place her under arrest,” said Tittle.
