VMHS Harlequins advance to state for second year in a row

20130408 VMHS One Act Play AF 0029MISSION—For only the second time since 1935, a One Act Play from Mission Consolidated Independent School District is advancing to the state competition. The Veterans Memorial High School Harlequins placed first at the regional competitions held this past weekend, qualifying them for state.

In addition to qualifying for state competition, several individual honors were received by members of the Harlequins at the regional competition. Beto Cantu and Alex Hinojosa were named part of the all-star cast. Anna Olivarez was an honorable mention.

This will be the second year in a row that the Harlequins have qualified to compete at the state level.

“I am so very proud of what the students have been able to accomplish this year,” said James Hodgson, theater arts teacher at VMHS. “Their commitment and intensity has not only helped them tackle a more complex play than was performed last year, they have improved upon every aspect of the process, from sets and costumes, to lighting, to the acting.”

The VMHS Harlequins are performing The Circus Animals Desertion, by Don Nigro. The play is set in the 1940’s and is an eerie story of young lady who leaves a trail of chaos.

Members of the Harlequins One Act Play are: Alex Hinojosa, Kimberly Stewart, Anna Olivarez, Katharyn Rodriguez, Beto Cantu, Karina Gamboa, Esai Garcia, Micaela Cantu, Emily Cantu, Sara Olivarez, Marisol Cervantes, Clarissa Garza, Jorge Ortiz, Carlos Tello, Brandon Hernandez, Karla Gastel, Jaime Bazaldua, Geselle Farias, Katian Lopez, Andrea Garcia, Brittany Bazaldua, Alex Hernandez, Miranda Morales, Debanhi Cespedes.

This is also the second in a row that the Harlequins advanced to regionals and marks the sixth year in a row they have won the district UIL One Act Play title.
