MISSION — The Mission City Council approved hiring 10 additional police officers last Friday at an annual cost of approximately $550,000. The council adopted a budget amendment to approve $248,503 for the remaining 12 pay periods of this fiscal year. The city will pay this expenditure out of the city’s general fund, said City Manager Julio Cerda.
This action comes on the heels of the opening of a new $2.2 million police substation and Fire Station No. 5 on Military and Glasscock roads.
Mission Mayor Norberto “Beto” Salinas said “These [new officers] are for our patrol units. We want to have more boots on the ground for visibility in our neighborhoods”
Mission Police Chief Leo Longoria said three of the new hires will be assigned to the new south side substation, and the rest will likely be assigned to the northwest side of the city.
“Right now we have the east side pretty well saturated. With the commercial and residential growth [in the Sharyland Plantation area], we’ve been pretty well forced to address this area with a lot more law enforcement. As we continue to annex area on our northwest side, I don’t believe we have the presence of law enforcement as strong as I think we should. So, that’s where we’re going next,” he added.
Mayor Salinas announced during the ribbon cutting that the city would soon develop plans to build another police substation on the northwest side. The proposed site for the facility is Inspiration Road at 2 ½ Mile Line Road, next to the fire station. The new building would be similar to the new south side substation, and the mayor plans to have it open in two years. Design work, though not yet started, is expected to begin soon.
