Peñitas awarded $3 million loan for new city hall and PD

20130715 Penitas-gets-3million-loan AF 0115PEÑITAS—The City of Peñitas was presented a $2,995,000 loan on Monday in a check ceremony at the Faith Fellowship Bible Church by Congressman Henry Cuellar and U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Rural Development State Director Paco Valentin.

The USDA-funded loan will be used to build a new city hall and police department for Peñitas, replacing the portable building that now houses both sets of offices.

The proposed facility will provide 11,200 square feet for the city hall offices and 5,640 square feet for the police department.

“It is about $3 million, low interest loan to build facilities,” Cuellar said. “We couldn’t get pure grants, but we are helping them (Peñitas) with a low interest loan.”

Cuellar mentioned the city just recently finished a project through USDA funds to build an $18 million wastewater system. He added now the underground portion is complete, now the city is beginning on changes above ground.

“It’s an exciting time to be here in the Valley,” Cuellar said. “We’ve got to look at what makes the Valley strong, and that is the small communities. The communities like the City of Peñitas.”
