LA-JOYA-LOGOLA JOYA – A $2.4 million project that La Joya Independent School District approved late last year, is finally going to the next phase. The school district approved engineering, material and civil services and an architect last week so construction of the building could proceed.

La Joya ISD partnered with the Federal Emergency Management Agency after being awarded funds to build a community safe room in December 2012.

The project cost is paid mostly by the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program. La Joya ISD will be paying 25 percent of the cost.

The dome shaped safe room will serve as a shelter during emergency situations. When not being used for emergencies, the building will serve as a multi-purpose community center by the district. The building will be 20,000 square feet in size.

Also approved at last week’s board meeting were parking lot, paving and school track improvements.

A request for authorization to donate easements to Agua SUD was postponed, pending more review. The request from Agua SUD is to make sewer system improvements for residents in the Palmview area. Lines proposed would run through easements located at Irene Garcia Middle School, EB Reyna Elementary and Flores Elementary. Texas Water Development Board recently awarded Agua SUD financial assistance to perform the improvements.
