Palmview High School makes coaching change

20130927 Coach-ReassignedFor the first time in school history, La Joya Palmview High School will have a head coach other than Manuel Flores on the sidelines of the Lobos’ football games. Flores was reassigned Monday to the athletic department and Margarito “Mage” Requenez, defensive coach, was named interim head coach.

“The leadership of the Lobo football has changed; however, the Lobo football program still stands strong as our athletes prepare to face the Donna Redskins in this week’s match-up,” said Victor Garza, athletic director, in a statement. “We expect that our coaches make this transition as easy as possible for our athletes.”

In his sixth season with the Lobos, Flores compiled a 16-38-0 overall record and 9-29-0 within the district. After a winless inaugural season in 2008, the Lobos showed steady improvement in the following two seasons with records of 3-7-0 and 5-5-0 in 2009 and 2010, respectively. However Palmview failed to surpass the .500 mark in subsequent seasons going 4-6-0 in 2011 and 2012.

The team opened this season 0-4.

With non-district losses to 4A teams Mission High and Veterans Memorial and district losses to sister school Juarez-Lincoln and a formerly winless Edinburg High team this season, Flores’ preseason expectations of taking his team’s success to the next level and qualifying for the state playoffs for the first time in school history were quickly fading.

“We’ve been very positive with the message to our players this year. We were a young team last year but all the kids that played last year are experienced now so the time has come for us to take it to the next level,” Flores said before the season.

Flores reported receiving a two-year extension from La Joya ISD shortly after the end of the 2012 season.

As for Requenez, he has not only been serving as co-special teams coordinator for the Lobos football team under Flores but he is also the head boys track coach at Palmview. Like Flores, Requenez has been at Palmview High School since its inception in 2008.

According to Requenez, Flores’ reassignment and his subsequent promotion to interim head coach was completely unexpected.

“It caught me by surprise,” Requenez said. “I had no answer at that time. I tried to refocus on the kids. It’s all about them.”

The Requenez-led Lobos will face their first opponent, the Donna Redskins, tonight at La Joya ISD Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
