City-of-Penitas-logoPEÑITAS—Twice in September, Peñitas officers received calls of suspicious activity. Both incidents ended up as cases of illegal gambling establishments, Police Chief Roel Bermea said.

“These are the first ones (gamerooms) we’ve seen here,” Bermea said.

In the first incident, a caller thought a house might be a stash house because of all the traffic. When officers showed up at the scene, they were given permission to enter and found 24 8-liner machines. Officers are still looking for the owner of the establishment.

Later in the month, officers saw a lot of activity at a business late at night. They were given permission to enter and found 26 8-liner machines inside. In this case, the owner was found and arrested.

Between both cases, the department seized $2,739.

Bermea said the department is looking into what to do with the seized machines.
