20131025 Julie-SilvaJim Brunson, publisher of the Progress Times, has named Julie Silva as editor of the newspaper serving Mission and Western Hidalgo County.

Silva is a veteran of print journalism since 2005, having served Central Texas, Laredo, Corpus Christi and the Valley as an editor and reporter. In 2004 Silva earned a bachelor's degree in mass communications from Texas State University-San Marcos.

Most of Silva’s career has been spent in Laredo at the Laredo Morning Times, where she served in several roles in her seven years, including reporter, city editor and managing editor. She said she feels that border town life opened her eyes to the wide range of stories waiting to be told, whether it is breaking news, enterprise reports or features on the people that make up the color of a community.

During her time at the Laredo Morning Times, she was a part of that publication’s team earning several state Associated Press honors, both as a manager and a reporter.

It was her management roles in Laredo where Silva felt she developed a passion for hard news and gave her an affinity for the community stories which give readers the “who, what, when, where and why of the city they call home.”

Following her time in Laredo, Silva ventured to Corpus Christi as an area reporter for the Caller-Times. While there, Silva says that she enjoyed being the voice of small towns. She earned recognition within the newsroom for her tireless work ethic and penchant for going above and beyond to get the story.

Brunson said, “With her experience as a manager, reporter, editor and aficionado of community journalism, Silva is an ideal fit for the Progress Times and the community. We’re glad to have her on board.”

She can be reached at (956) 585-4893, julie@progresstimes.net or via Twitter @jmsilva61.
