Student Rene Diaz Jr. collapsed on Oct. 31 during basketball practice, according to Craig Verley, public information officer.
“They had a student that morning collapse in the gym and was unresponsive,” Verley said. “He is actually sitting with us in this room this evening, due in part to the actions of these individuals here.”
The staff members that were recognized included: Rogers Brown, Hosea Henderson III, Everardo Castellano Jr., Robert Aparicio, Janelle Hernandez and Elizabeth Ponce. Students who assisted were Jose Garcia, Jesus Cuellar, Caleb Oviedo and Adrian Cerda.
Diaz stood with his fellow athletes and coaches who acted quickly in an emergency situation. His parents were also in the audience, thankful to the small group that saved their son’s life.
Ponce, a nurse at MHS, welled up with tears and said she was so glad to have Diaz here and added he is an awesome young man. She said staff would keep monitoring Diaz as he rehabilitates.
“Heart failure is what happened, and they were able to make all of these extraordinary efforts,” Lopez said. “There were students involved…your character is a testament to how you respond in critical situations. I’m very thankful to have this team.”
