At a meeting with local owners and managers of businesses on the block Friday, Feb. 14, City Manager Martin Garza said the city is starting on the west side of the block in front of the park. There, he said, contractors will put in a demonstration of what the entire project will look like.
“We wanted to make sure that we addressed priorities for them,” Garza said. “We wanted to know what times they open, what times they close, what parking areas do they use the most.”
The $2.6 million project revamps Conway Avenue from First to 14th Streets. It includes benches, pavers, palm trees and new lighting. The project also has been expanded to include a splash pad and a “Welcome to Mission” sign.
Friday, Garza gave the managers of H-E-B and BBVA Compass his cell phone number to report any issues with construction, expected to take about 10 months. The city is working block-by-block and meeting with business owners and managers as they go along.
Garza said they chose to start in the 800 block because it had the fewest businesses and it would give them a better idea of how much time it would take to complete each block. From the 800 block, Highmark workers will move south. There’s a possibility, Garza said a second crew could start work sometime at 14th Street and move south from there.
At one point or another, he said the city may need to close a lane of traffic, but because contractors are only working one side of the street at a time, only one lane will be closed at any one time, he said.blog comments powered by Disqus
