The San Benito Chamber of Commerce will host the Rio Grande Valley Sportsman’s Expo on Aug. 20 in San Benito.  The events consist of the Centennial Skeet Shoot-Out/Cook-Off/Alligator Gar Round-Up and Market Day at the San Benito Fairgrounds on FM 510.

Pre-registration for the event can be made by emailing or calling Zeke Padilla at 399-5321. On-site registration begins at 8 a.m. the day of the event. The first shot will be fired at 8:45 a.m. and no teams will be allowed after 10 a.m.

Shooting competition includes a three-person team, seven stations and 25 targets per person for a registration fee of $325. A $10 mulligan, with a maximum of two per person, is available.

Shooting for cash games includes $20 for an Annie Oakley, $10 for Texas Country Doubles and $10 for flurries.  Three places will be awarded including a bay fishing trip for three and a one-night Arroyo cabin stay.  Shooters must provide their own gun, ammunition and protection for eyes and ears.

The Centennial Cook-Off features categories of beef brisket, pork spare ribs, pan de campo and half-chickens. Set-up will be the evening before the event, starting at 5 p.m. Cooking will not begin until Saturday morning after inspection of meat. Cash prizes and trophies will be awarded.  Entry fee per category is $25.

The event also marks the return of the Alligator Gar Round-Up with two categories: rod and reel and bow and arrow.  Fishing may be from a favorite fishing spot in area resacas or canals. The shotgun start is at 6 p.m. Friday, Aug. 19. The weigh station is at San Benito Fairgrounds, FM 510, beginning Saturday at 8 a.m. and concluding at 11:30 a.m.  Registration is $25 per person.

Prizes for each category go to the top three anglers with the top angler receiving an additional $200 and the Alligator-Gar Round-Up bragging rights for one year, according to Padilla.
