OBIT-Minerva M. Ruiz

SULLIVAN CITY - Minerva M. Ruiz, 67, passed away Saturday, July 21, 2012 after a two-year battle against pancreatic cancer.  

Mrs. Ruiz was born January 31, 1945 in Rio Grande City to Abel Martinez and Maria Elvia Rodriguez. She was a registered nurse at M.D. Anderson in Houston, McAllen Medical Center, the La Joya ISD and Mission Hospital.

OBIT-Estefana Estrada

MISSION - Estefana Estrada, 86, passed away Friday, July 20, 2012 at Life Care Hospital of South Texas in McAllen. She was born to Gregorio Rosas and Rosa Garza in Mission on August 22, 1925.

Survivors include her children, Jose Luis Ochoa, Estella Hernandez, Octavio Estrada, Willie Estrada, Deciderio Estrada, Melba Faulkner, David Estrada, Noe Estrada and Gracie Estrada; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

OBIT-Jose Fuentes

MISSION - Jose Fuentes, 82, passed away Tuesday, July 17, 2012 at Mission Regional Medical Center. He was born on July 14, 1930 in Mission.

He is survived by his wife, Ramona Fuentes; children, Antonio Avila, Miguel Avila, Jose Javier Avila, Silvestre Avila, Rosa Maria Diaz and Maria Rosas; brothers, Juan Fuentes, Guadalupe Fuentes, Manuel Fuentes, Arturo Fuentes and Eduardo Fuentes; and sisters, Anastacia Ledesma, Gertrudes Hernandez, Maria Ofilia Bermea and Maria Fuentes.

OBIT-Arnoldo Villarreal

MISSION - Arnoldo Villarreal, 53, died Friday, July 13, 2012, at Solara Hospital in Edinburg after battling brain cancer for 22 months.

Mr. Villarreal was born on September 13, 1958 to Adelaido A. Villarreal Sr. and Maria Olaya Loya Villarreal in Mission. He served with the military police in the U.S. Army from 1978-1981 and later worked for 21 years at Agua S.U.D until his retirement in 2011.

OBIT-Bernice Potts

MISSION - Bernice Potts, 76, passed away Saturday, July 14, 2012 in Mission.

She was born to Bennie and Jewel Hillis of Gainesville on October 15, 1935.

She was preceded in death by her parents and by a brother Dewayne Hillis.

OBIT-Percy Horace King

MISSION - Percy Horace "P.H." King, passed away on Wednesday, July 11.

Mr. King was born on December 25, 1913 in Baird. After graduation from Baird High School in 1930, he worked in the family restaurant and joined the Baird Volunteer Fire Department. In 1943 he helped start the fire department at Camp Berkley in Abilene. That same year, he went to work for Lockheed Corporation at Love Field in Dallas as a fireman. In 1947 he went to work for the United States Air Force. He was a civilian personnel assistant and served as fireman in San Angelo and Laredo. In 1953 he was transferred to Moore Airfield in Mission. In 1954 he was appointed as fire marshall at Moore Airfield which had become a civilian flight training center operated by California Eastern Corporation.

OBIT-Cecil Goffnett

MISSION - Cecil Goffnett, 88, of Mission passed away on Sunday, July 15, 2012 at Mission Nursing Home.

Mr. Goffnett was born on January 7, 1924, in Mt. Pleasant, Mich. He was a veteran of WWII and served in Guam from 1943-1946.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Virginia; sons, John and Gary Goffnett, both of Mt. Pleasant; daughters, Barb Elliott and Aimee Hankins, both of Mission; brother, Elton Goffnett; sister, Gala Heilbronn; and nine grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
