Ramiro Tijerina passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 29, 2011 at Alfredo Gonzalez Veterans Nursing Home in McAllen. He was born on Jan. 13, 1925 to Ernesto Tijerina and Juanita Valadez.
Mr. Tijerina was a member of the Army Air Force (AAF) and served in World War II, where he was assigned as a guard patrolman and mail clerk. He was a lifelong resident of Mission, where he became the first Hispanic mail carrier. He was a member of Catholic War Veterans.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Delia Ramirez Tijerina; children, Ramiro Tijerina and Robert Luis Tijerina; brother, Reynaldo Valadez; 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his step-father, Santana Valadez; and brothers, Tony Tijerina and Robert Valadez.
The funeral mass will be celebrated at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Mission at 10 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 2. Burial follows at the Rio Grande Valley State Veterans Cemetery.
