MISSION – Jack Yewell, 90, long-time Mission resident, passed away in Austin on Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2012.
He was born on June 4, 1921 to Thestle Yewell and Eugenia Lee Ashby in Earle, Arkansas and moved to Mission when he was eight years old. He had several careers throughout his lifetime, including mechanic in his father's Mobil station, farming, advertising, bowling instructor, and real estate broker. In 1939 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and survived the sinking of his ship, the USS Northampton, at Guadalcanal.
Mr. Yewell is survived by his daughter, Susan Fernandez; son, Mickey Yewell of Mission; sisters, Frances Adams of Wharton and Leona Phipps; and four grandchildren.
Mr. Yewell was preceded in death by his parents and his wife of 64 years, Evelyn Yewell.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, Jan. 16, at 1 p.m. at Virgil Wilson Memorial Chapel in Mission.
