OBIT: Oscar Ruben Valadez Sr.

Oscar Ruben Valadez Sr., 82, passed away Thursday, March 22, 2012.

Born on May 15, 1929, in Mission to Juanita Rendon Silguero and Ventura Soto Valadez, he was a 1947 graduate of Mission High School, and served honorably in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He graduated from Pan American University in 1953 with a bachelor's degree in history and educational administration. In 1959, he received his master's degree in education administration and social sciences from Texas A&I University in Kingsville. Post-graduate and doctoral work was completed at the University of Texas, Southern Methodist University, and East Texas State University.

He held various teaching positions in the Zapata ISD and the La Joya ISD. He was employed by Mission ISD from 1953 until 1970, where he taught and was an assistant principal at Roosevelt Elementary, a Pearson Elementary principal, and Mission Junior High School principal. In 1970, he moved to Dallas and was named the first Mexican American high school principal in Dallas ISD, serving at North Dallas High School.

Mr. Valadez served as the first Mexican American vice-chancellor of the Dallas County Community College District and went on to become vice-president of the El Paso Community College District. He was later a school administrator in Socorro ISD and San Elizario ISD superintendent. He retired as Asst. Superintendent of Hidalgo ISD and later worked as director for Teach for America and at Tarleton State University.

Survivors include his children, Cynthia Imelda Valadez, Oscar Ruben Valadez Jr., Daniel David Valadez, Noel Dennis Valadez, Alex Xavier Valadez, and Liliana Gloria Valadez Beavers; sister, Dora Valadez Garza; 19 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his son, Joel Valadez; brothers, Manuel Valadez and Ventura Valadez; and parents, Juanita Silguero and Ventura Soto Valadez.

The funeral mass was held March 26 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Mission. Interment followed at Laurel Hill Cemetery in Mission.
