Former Mission Police Chief Robert Javier Garza, 82, passed away early Friday morning, Sept. 7, 2012.

Chief Garza was born Sept. 18, 1929 to Santiago and Olivia Garza in Rio Grande City where he was raised with his seven brothers.

Beginning at the age of 16, he served in the U.S. Army and U.S. Navy for seven years. He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He was a retired police captain of Seal Beach, California, an assistant chief in McAllen, and later a police chief in Mission and Weslaco. After his second retirement, he continued to serve the community as a member of Mission’s Traffic Safety Commission.

Survivors include his wife of 33 years, Maria Luisa Garza; sons, Rob and Matt; and a grandson, all of Mission.

A funeral service was held Sept. 11 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Mission with burial following at the Rio Grande Valley State Veterans Cemetery.
