OBIT-Angela F. Canales

McALLEN – Angela F. Canales, 84, passed away Monday, Sept. 24, 2012.

She was born Angela Flores in Mission on Feb. 10, 1928.

Mrs. Canales attended Mission schools and, to her friends, she was known as "Golie." She played the piano at the Methodist church on a regular basis. She graduated early from Mission High and attended the St. Louis Institute of Music for one year before transferring to the University of Texas in Austin. At UT she met and married Horacio "Lacho" Canales from Benavides. He was finishing a bachelor's degree in business and entering UT law school.

After graduating with a degree in music education, Mrs. Canales worked for the State of Texas as a juvenile probation officer. Upon her husband's graduation from law school, the family moved to Benavides until her husband’s death in 1960. At that time, she moved to McAllen.

While in Benavides, she was a teacher in the nearby Rialitos community. She resumed teaching in McAllen retiring after 30 years. She earned her master's degree in education. Her career included running the parental involvement program for McAllen ISD.

She is survived by her daughter, Lorella (John) Martin; son, Neo (Dixie) Canales; a granddaughter, Audrey Lindholm; grandson, Patrick Fitzgerald; and three great-grandchildren.

The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 27, with visitation at 9 a.m. at Kreidler Funeral Home in McAllen. Interment will follow in Benavides.
