Donna Jean Struyk, 90, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2012, at Mission Regional Medical Center.
Mrs. Struyk was born April 6, 1922 in Sheldon, Iowa. She graduated from high school at age 16 and went on to college and nursing school. After graduating, she joined the U.S. Army and served in the U.S. Army Nurses Corps attaining the rank of 2nd Lieutenant.
Following WWII, she returned to Sheldon, married Harold Struyk and moved to Des Moines, Iowa. She was active in her church choir, played the piano, violin and clarinet and served as choir director at several parishes over the years. She was a member of the Sweet Adeline's Barbershop organization for over 60 years, served as director for the chapter and sang in several award-winning quartets.
She is survived by her husband; children Dave, Kathy, Susan and Marcia; and eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
A graveside service with military honors will be conducted on Tuesday, Oct. 2, at 11a.m. at the Rio Grande Valley State Veterans Cemetery in Mission. Family and friends are invited to gather following the service at Aladdin Villas ballroom in Mission.
