LA FERIA - Machiko Shimotsu passed away after a brief illness on Sunday, Oct. 28, 2012.
Born in California, one of six children of Shintaro and Asa Hanawa, her family lived and worked on the farm in Cayucos, San Luis Obispo County, California until relocated during WWII to the interior of California.
She began her education in the field of nursing at UC Berkley and later finished it in Colorado. After the war, her family moved to the Rio Grande Valley where she met and married Harry Shimotsu.
Survivors include her husband; children, Gary, Grace, Karen and Ron Shimotsu; siblings, Kay Hanaway and Rose Tanka; and two grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her brothers, Henry and Thomas Hanawa.
A memorial service will be Saturday, Nov. 3, at 11 a.m. at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home, 710 Ed Carey Dr. in Harlingen.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to the charity of one’s choice or to the Sharyland ISD Education Foundation, Shimotsu Elementary, ATTN: Dr. Melissa Martinez, 1106 N. Shary Road, Mission, TX 78572.
