PALMHURST – Medardo De Leon Sr., 87, passed away Saturday, Dec. 28, 2012, at McAllen Medical Center.
Mr. De Leon was born on June 8, 1925 in McAllen to Encarnacion and Barbara R. De Leon. He attended Mission schools. On September 6, 1943, he was inducted into our U.S. Navy on the USS Half Moon for 24 months of sea duty during the American Area Campaign, Asiatic-Pacific Area during World War II. He was honorably discharged on March 22, 1946 as a COXSWAIN SV-V6 USNR.
Mr. De Leon married Rosalba Saenz De Leon on Jan. 1, 1950. He worked at Moore Field Air Base, Bob Howell Furniture Co. in Mission, First National Bank of Mission, and eventually retired from the U.S. Postal Service.
Survivors include his children, Medardo De Leon Jr., Janie Barratachea, Barbara Garcia, Polo, Ruben Sr., Victor, and Homer De Leon; and 14 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years and his parents; sisters, Maria De Jesus Ramirez, Feliciana R. Reyna and Aurora R. Hernandez; and brothers, Apolonio and Baldomero Ramirez.
The funeral mass was held Dec. 31 at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Mission. Interment followed at Valley Memorial Gardens in McAllen.
Pallbearers were his grandsons, Peter Barratachea, Noe De Leon, Ruben De Leon Jr., Nick De Leon, Alberto Garcia IV, Zachary De Leon and Gavin De Leon. Honorary pallbearers were his granddaughters, Jennifer St. John, Alana Lott, Andrea Garcia, Liana Garcia, Amy Barratachea, Rebecca De Leon and Danielle De Leon.
Memorial donations may be made to the Alfredo Gonzales Texas State Veterans Home in McAllen.
