MISSION – Letha Bridges Stevens, 100, passed away at her residence, Thursday, April 7, 2011.

Mrs. Stevens was born March 1, 1911, in Madison, Nebraska to George and Maggie Bridges. She moved to the Sharyland area in 1917 with her family.

She was active in the then First Methodist Church in Mission serving on various committees and as the Circle chairman. She was also a Cub Scout den mother and a Mission High School Band Booster. She worked as the pastry chef at the Sharyland cafeteria for several years.

At the time of her death, Mrs. Stevens was the oldest member of the First United Methodist Church in Mission as well as having the distinction of having been the longest member for 81 years.

Through the years, she stayed with many children while their parents were out of town and had fond, wonderful memories to share of those times. She was a talented seamstress, a wonderful cook, a caring caregiver and a true friend.

Letha is survived by her daughter, Lorraine (Mike) Neubauer; son, Henry (Cecile) Stevens; sister Alice Bridges; grandchildren, Janet (James) McCrae, Steve Scott, Jody (Palmer) Neubauer, Jenny Krimm, Michael Neubauer, and Coy (Pily) Stevens; 11 great-grandchildren.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Coy Stevens; her parents; brothers, Henry, Marvin and Charles; and sisters, Margaret Bridges and Effie Paper.

A graveside service will be held on Monday, April 11, at 10 a.m. at Valley Memorial Gardens Cemetery in McAllen.

Pallbearers will be her nephews, M.J. Bridges and Richard Bridges; grandsons, Steve Scott and Coy Stevens; great-grandson, Steven Scott; and a grandson-in-law, James McCrae.
