MISSION—Robert W. Leidner, Jr., was born in Hammond, La., on Sept. 22, 1925. He passed away peacefully, surrounded by praying family members, on April 14, 2011.

He graduated from Louisiana State University and earned a masters degree from Texas A&I University. A longtime South Texas educator, he moved to the Rio Grande Valley in 1947. He taught in the Rio Grande City area and in Sharyland, Edinburg and Mission public schools. He also served as an agriculture instructor for World War II veterans. He taught high school vocational agriculture in Edinburg during the early 1950s and in Mission from 1956 until 1966. He served as principal at the old Castro Elementary School in Mission and retired from his educational career in 1983 as principal at Mission’s Roosevelt Elementary School.

He is survived by his wife Peggy; sons, John (Mary) Leidner of Tifton, Georgia; Bill (Donna) Leidner of Mission; daughter, Mary Killingsworth (Fred) of Longview; six grandchildren, Robert Leidner III (Melissa) of Irving, Michael Leidner of Orange Grove, Stephen Leidner of Edinburg, Mark Leidner of Northampton, Massachusetts, Andrew Leidner of Bryan, and Laura Leidner of Athens, GA.

He was preceded in death by his father, Robert W. Leidner, Sr.; mother, Helen Gessner Leidner; brother, Thomas Gessner Leidner; first wife and the mother of his three children, Inez Tilly Leidner; and second wife, Louise Young Leidner.

Visitation was planned for Sunday, April 17, from 5-9 p.m., with rosary prayers starting at 7 p.m. at Ric Brown Family Funeral Home in Mission. A funeral mass is planned for Monday, April 18, at 10 a.m. at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Mission.

Grandsons and Jeremy Perez, Fred Killingsworth and Andy Kaufman will serve as pallbearers. Burial will follow at Valley Memorial Gardens Cemetery in McAllen.  Services are under the direction of Ric Brown Family Funeral Home in Mission.
