OBIT-Rita Mae Cantu

McALLEN - Rita Mae Cantu passed away on May 31, 2013.

Mrs. Cantu grew up in Mission where she attended Our Lady of Guadalupe School and Mission High School and continued her education at the University of Texas-Pan American. With a degree in education, she began her career with the PSJA school district at Sorensen Elementary, where she taught for three years while working on her master's degree. She then transferred to MISD where she taught for the rest of her teaching career until retirement. She was a member of various professional organizations and Beta Sigma Phi and volunteered at Rio Grande Regional Hospital working with the pastoral services.

She is survived by children, Richard Jason Cantu of Houston, and Ruby Mae Cantu of San Antonio; sisters, Alma Anzaldua and Viola Gonzalez; and brother Rafael Garza Jr.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday June 4, from 3 to 7 p.m. with a rosary at 6 p.m. at Ceballos Funeral Home in McAllen.
