Sabino Cortez, Sr., 81, of Kerrville, passed away unexpectedly on April 24, 2011.

Mr. Cortez was born December 30, 1929 in Killeen to Basilio Cortez and Cecilia Luna Cortez.

Retired from Sid Peterson Hospital, he was a devoted member of the Notre Dame Catholic Church and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and being outdoors.  He spent his final years dancing to mariachi and making jokes with his three children, eight grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren.

He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Romana Ortiz Cortez; brother, Miguel Cortez and wife, Maria of San Antonio; sons, Sabino Cortez Jr. and wife, Richey, of Stephenville, and Javier Cortez and wife, Dyanne of Austin; daughter, Gloria Cortez of Austin; grandchildren, Israh Cortez and wife, Melissa, Josiah Cortez and wife, Kristinia, Anna Luna and husband, William, John Cortez, Samuel Cortez, Sabino Cortez III, Terisa Cortez, and Michael Cortez; great-grandchildren. Dillon, Tristan, Corri, Cade, Mia, Maya, Elijah, Juliet, Gabriel and Olivia; and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and countless friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and nine siblings.

A rosary will be held Wednesday, April 27, at 6 p.m. at Grimes Funeral Chapels with a bilingual funeral mass to be held Thursday, April 28, at 10 Aa.m.at Notre Dame Catholic Church, 909 Main Street, Kerrville. Interment will follow at Garden of Memories Cemetery in Kerrville. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Grimes Funeral Chapels of Kerrville.

Pallbearers are his six grandsons. Honorary pallbearers will be Reymundo Rodriguez, Gilbert Gauna, and Ruben Ortiz.

In lieu of flowers, friends and family may send donations to Notre Dame Catholic Church.
