OBIT-James Lowell Gully

McALLEN/SHARYLAND – James Lowell Gully, 95, on Monday, Sept. 30, 2013, at Rio Grande Regional Hospital in McAllen.

Mr. Gully was born on Dec. 22, 1917 in Liberal, Kan. and grew up in Hooker, Okla. His family moved to the Sharyland area while he was in his teens. He graduated from Sharyland High School in 1936 in a class of 13 graduating seniors, attended Edinburg Junior College where he played varsity basketball for two years and graduated in 1939. He later graduated from Sul Ross State College in 1941.

He was a veteran of WW II and the Korean War and taught at McAllen High School for 24 years.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Masako Gunji Gully; children, Steven Gully, Karen Stubbs, Iris Soto, Arlin Gully and Jason Gully; sisters, Lois Boyd and Pat Gully; and 12 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Oct. 5, at 10 a.m. at First United Methodist Church in McAllen.
