MISSION - Captain Jesus "Chuy" Cruz Sr., 61, passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2013.
Born on Dec. 25, 1951 in McCook, Capt. Cruz was a Sargent in the United States Army and served in Vietnam. He was a captain with the sheriff’s department for 14 years, followed by another 14 years as chief deputy constable for Precinct 3.
Survivors include his wife of 37 years, Helen Doyle Cruz; children, Heather Smith, Raul Cruz, Jesus Cruz Jr. and Eleanor Orrego; siblings, Emilio Cruz, Alonzo Cruz, Raul Cruz, Robert Cruz, Albert Cruz, Tomasita, Rosalinda and Irma; and nine grandchildren.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Raul and Rosa Cruz.
A memorial service was held on Nov. 23 at Virgil Wilson Memorial Chapel in Mission. Military honors were under the direction of VFW Post 8788 of McAllen and honorary guard Patriot Riders and Hidalgo County Constable Pct. 3.
