MISSION - Elia Yolanda Garcia, 83, passed away on Sunday, Jan. 12, 2014.
Mrs. Garcia was born on June 11, 1930. She was a 1949 graduate of Sharyland High and a 1953 graduate of North Texas State University in Denton where she received a degree in business administration. Active in the Sharyland school district, she served as a home room mother, PTA member, charter member of the Sharyland band boosters, Cub Scout den mother, substitute teacher and on the advisory committee member to the district’s superintendent.
Her community service in Mission included working with the Mission Crime Stoppers, Mission for Progress committee, Leadership Mission, Census Count committee, Citizen’s Advisory Board, O.W.L.S and a charter member of the Mission Historical Museum. She worked as an official for city, school, and county elections for over 25 years. For her community services she received "The Spirit of Mission Award."
Her career included many years in banking, as a CPA, a comptroller for government programs and an office manager. She considered her most rewarding job as raising her four children and putting them through college.
Survivors include her husband of 57 years, Arturo Garcia; sons, Arturo Rene of Dallas, Luis Eduardo of Mission and Hector Ruben of Mission; daughter, Lila Jean (George Ashley) Lewis of Austin; and a brother, Arnoldo (Elida) Garza of Mission.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Olivero Garza Sr. and Santos Torres Garza; brothers, Edelmiro Garza, Olivero Garza Jr. of Mission and Osbaldo Garza; and sisters, Elisa (Gavino) Garza and Beatrice (Efrain) Pena.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, Jan. 15, beginning at 3 p.m. with a rosary at 7 p.m. at Ric Brown Funeral Home in Mission. The funeral service will be held at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Mission on Thursday, Jan. 16, at 1 p.m. A graveside service will follow at Valley Memorial Gardens Cemetery. A gathering will be held at the Ric Brown Funeral Home reception hall immediately following.
In lieu of flowers, the family has suggested that donations would be appreciated to purchase library books at the Olivero Garza, Sr. Elementary School which was named for her father. Send donations to 1106 N. Shary Road, Mission, TX, 78572, Attn: Melanie Christensen.
