MISSION - Edward Byron Beatty, 87, passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2014.
Mr. Beatty was born in McAllen to Byron and Julia Beatty on Sept. 23rd, 1926. He graduated from McAllen High School in 1943 and joined the Navy where he served in U.S. and Pacific areas during WWII. He was discharged in 1946 with rank of Petty Officer 2C. He attended Texas University and Texas Christian University majoring in math and physics and was recalled for service in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War and discharged in 1952 with rank of Tech Sgt.
Mr. Beatty went on to work as an engineer in the Venezuela oil industry and as a field engineer with IBM Corp. in the military products computer division. He was a flight controller at NASA in Houston during the Gemini and Apollo manned space flights and then became a program chairman of computer and electronics at TSTC in McAllen.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Margie Schneider Beatty; his parents; and a sister, Mary Kay.
Survivors include his stepchildren, Chris Schneider, Eddie Schneider, Steve Schneider and Theresa Chapa; and many step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.
A memorial mass will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 21, at 2 p.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Mission.
