OBIT-Norma Woolsey

McALLEN - Norma Woolsey passed away at her home in McAllen on Friday, Feb. 7, 2014.

Mrs. Woolsey was born on Feb. 17, 1939 in Mission.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Valentin de la Garza and Enriqueta Pena, and the aunt who raised her after her mother’s death, Maria de la Garza.

Survivors include her husband of 44 years, Tom Woolsey of McAllen; sons, Alex Woolsey of Seguin, R.T. Woolsey of Amarillo; daughter Adriana Muro of McAllen; brothers, Valentin de la Garza, Fernando de la Garza, Noelia Antelo and Thelma Benison; and seven grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

She was raised in Mission and she was always active in her school and community. She graduated from Mission High School in 1957 and Pan American College in 1960 with a bachelor’s degree in education.

As an educator, she held certifications in elementary, special, bilingual kindergarten and early childhood education. She worked with Mission ISD and McAllen ISD from 1960 until 1972. After working as a specialist with early childhood and migrant programs from 1972-1979, she returned to the McAllen ISD in 1979 where she was a Parental Involvement Coordinator until she retired.

She served as president of University of Texas Pan American-International Women's Board and IMAS Museum Guild and as president-elect of the Pan American Round Table. She was also a member of the Child Study Club and a volunteer for Palmer Drug Abuse Program in McAllen.

Visitation will be held on Monday, Feb. 10, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Kreidler Funeral Home in McAllen. The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 11, at First United Methodist Church in McAllen at 10 a.m. The inurnment service will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 12, at 1 p.m. at Roselawn Cemetery.
