PAYSON, UT – Daniel Birch Larsen, 85, passed away in Payson on Saturday, June 4, 2011 of multiple health complications.

OBIT_DBirchLarsenHe was the first son born to Gladys Eola Tuft and Daniel Jones Larsen on April 5, 1926 in Monroe, Sevier County, UT. As a young boy and during depression years, he herded sheep with his brother, Ole, up and down the lanes of Monroe. He attended grade school, junior high, and high school in Monroe and served as student body president his senior year. He married Melba Joan Parker in the Manti Temple in 1951.

He graduated from the University of Utah with a Bachelor of Science degree in pharmacy. He, with his family, moved to South Texas – the Rio Grande Valley – where he owned and operated drug stores with several partners for 35 years, including Mission. He loved his many customers and partners.

He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many capacities – as a young missionary to Brazil from 1948 to 1950, and later in life as mission president in Barcelona, Spain, regional representative to Portugal, and as president of the missionary training center in Sao Paulo, Brazil. He held numerous church leadership and other positions in the Valley and served as the first stake president.  His great love was teaching the gospel to anyone who would listen. This missionary spirit was always a part of his life.

In 1992 he sold his businesses and home in order to serve in the Portugal church assignment. He then returned to live in Joseph, Utah until moving to Santaquin, UT six years ago. During the time he lived in Joseph, he also did some pharmacy relief work around the Sevier County area.

He had a great appreciation for men who served in the armed forces of the United States and had a great interest in the wars of the world. He was unable to serve himself because of health problems.

He is survived by his wife; children, Christine Hildreth of Dillon, Montana, Charles Larsen (Leanne) of Littleton, Colorado, Ann Kator (Greg) of Boise, Idaho, Kathy Larsen Darquea (Frank) of Santaquin, Daniel "Bud" Larsen (Dalynda) of Temecula, California, and Tom Larsen (Jenifer) of Santaquin. He was the proud grandfather of 24 and the great-grandfather of 16.  He is also survived by his brothers and sisters, Kay Hallows Brown of St. George, UT, Marilyn Larsen of Payson, UT, Frank Larsen of Washington, UT, Vivan Larsen of Onalaska, TX, and David Larsen of Payson.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Donna and Karma; and brother, Ole.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 11, 2011 at 11 a.m. in the Santaquin Third Ward LDS Chapel, 45 South 500 West, Santaquin.  The viewing will be held at the chapel on Friday evening from 7 to 8 p.m. and again, Saturday morning from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., prior to the service. Burial will follow at 4 p.m. in the Monroe City Cemetery.  Arrangements are under the direction of Neal S. Magleby & Sons Mortuary of Richfield/Salina/Manti, UT.
