MISSION - Michael Conway Martin was born on November 30, 1948, in McAllen. Michael passed away suddenly on August 27, 2011, in Mission. He was 62.
Michael graduated from Mission High School in 1967, attended Trinity University for two years, and was a proud graduate of the University of Texas at Austin where he received a degree in business administration. He also served in the United States Navy after graduation from college.
At the time of his death, Michael was an Instructional Aide at Kenneth White Junior High School in Mission. For many years each summer, he was a golf coach for the Mission Junior Golf Program at Shary Golf Course. Mike was an avid and accomplished golfer who began playing golf at the age of 11. He enjoyed helping young golfers learn to play the sport that gave him many happy years at Shary Golf Course with his golfing friends. Michael previously served on the Shary Golf Course Advisory Board.
Michael is survived by his loving parents, Mary Alice and Scott Martin, of Mission. Also surviving him are his two sisters and brothers-in-law: Rebecca and David Crook of Mission, and Mary Dale and Kenneth Newsome of Fairfax, Virginia. Michael is also survived by his niece and two nephews who were so loved by him: Laura Dudley of Fairfax, Virginia; Scott Dudley of Harrisonburg, Virginia; and Daniel Crook of San Marcos. Also surviving Michael are his aunts, uncles, cousins and friends that he dearly loved.
Michael was preceded in death by his younger brother and best friend, David Martin, who passed away in 1990, and his maternal and paternal grandparents.
Perhaps Michael’s greatest gift to his family and friends was his kind and generous heart that he shared with all of us and his willingness to help us in any way he could. He was a devoted and loving son, a loyal and supportive brother and uncle, and a true friend to many. Our family will miss him every day, and we will carry him in our hearts always. We wish to thank all of Mike’s friends and extended family who shared their love and friendship with him. Michael was a happy man who cherished his family, loved to play golf, and was a loyal and ardent supporter of The University of Texas sports teams.
A rosary was held on Wednesday, August 31, at Ric Brown Family Funeral Home in Mission. A funeral mass will be held on Thursday, September 1, at 9 a.m. at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Mission, and his burial will follow at Laurel Hill Cemetery.
Serving as Michael’s pallbearers will be Jorge Cavazos, Arnaldo Corpus, Daniel Crook, Medardo De Leon, Jr., Scott Dudley, Whitney Jones, Richard Martinez and Charles Zey.
