MISSION - Genoveva Ramos Avila, 71, passed away on Saturday, August 27, 2011, at Solara Hospital in McAllen.
She graduated from Mission High School, and received her master's degree from Pan American University. Following college, she was a special education teacher for over 40 years and received Teacher of the Year for McAllen ISD. Mrs. Avila was a Catholic and a member of the Guadalupanas, Catholic Daughters, and Damas Catholicas. She was a graduate of Leadership Mission, and received the honor of Woman of the Year for the City of Mission. She was involved in the Hidalgo County Juvenile Conference Committee and was a member of the Alpha Delta Kappa Sorority.
She is survived by her children, Grace Marie Rodriguez of Virginia, Gloria Melba Avila of Denison, Humberto Javier Avila of Rockwall, Hernan Jaime Avila of San Antonio, Ginette Martha Avila-Irizarry of Humble, and Hector Joseph Avila of Houston; siblings, Jesus Guillermo Ramos, Maria Godelba Garcia, Julian Gerardo Ramos, Graciela Ramos, and Juan Gilberto Ramos; and15 grandchildren and one great-grandson.
Preceding her in death were her husband, Humberto Javier Avila; parents, Julian and Felipa Ramos; and a brother, Guadalupe Ramos.
A funeral mass was held Aug. 31 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Mission. Burial followed at Laurel Hill Cemetery in Mission.
