Progress Times photo by Luciano GuerraAt the Veterans Memorial High School gym Tuesday evening, the Lady Patriots varsity volleyball team swept the Lady Eagles in three straight sets for the second time this season. With the win, Coach Diana Lerma’s 16th-ranked Lady Patriots squad improved their district record to 11-1. Veterans Memorial took the first and second sets by identical scores of 25-17 and completed the sweep in the third set by a score of 25-13. Tuesday’s loss dropped the Lady Eagles’ district record to 7-5.

Top performers for the Lady Patriots included Shania Gilpin with 24 kills and seven digs, Gabby Lerma with 15 kills, 16 digs and three aces, Kenia Garcia with 16 assists and seven digs, Kassy Lopez with 13 assists and seven digs and Mariah Gonzalez with 25 digs.

How is this possible? Their opponent is Edcouch-Elsa, who must forfeit all their football games this season, due to of alleged violations of the UIL's new eight hours-a-week practice rule.

Facing the UIL’s so called “death penalty,” Edcouch-Elsa has since filed an appeal, but the decision on the appeal may not be known prior to the start of tonight’s game. As a result, the Eagles could take the field tonight not knowing if the final score will matter.

Progress Times photo by Doug YoungEDINBURG – If anyone saw The University of Texas Longhorns come-from-behind to pull off a last minute 41-36 victory over Oklahoma State on Saturday, then they have a good idea of what went on at Cats Stadium two nights earlier between Sharyland and Edinburg Economedes. 

The Rattlers had their character put to the test and overcame a 28-point second quarter by the Jaguars and a 14-point halftime deficit to pull off a dramatic 55-48 victory over Economedes on an 11-yard touchdown run by Sharyland quarterback Tres Barrera with 17 seconds left in the game.

Progress Times photo by Luciano GuerraTuesday evening at the Palmview High School gymnasium the Juarez-Lincoln Lady Huskies defeated the Palmview Lady Lobos for the second time this season. The Lady Lobos took the first set in the best of five series by a score of 25-17. The Lady Huskies fought back in the second set however and won by the smallest of margins possible 26-24. With the game tied at one set each, the Lady Huskies took the pivotal third set by a score of 25-14 and finished off the Lady Lobos in the fourth set 25-16.

With 21 kills, six blocks and five aces, Juarez-Lincoln’s Lupita Salinas stood out for head coach Kay Dee Benavidez’ Lady Huskies on Tuesday.

“Lupita Salinas, our first middle hitter, played an outstanding game today. She had been kind of off and on but she really stepped it up today,” said Benavidez.

The Sharyland Rattlers Boys Cross Country Team: From left, René Guillén, Luis Núñez, Andrés Calderón, Alexis Guerrero, Javier Valdéz, Gabriel Rodríguez, José Alemán, and José Ángel González.MISSION – Sharyland’s boys cross country schedule this year is a tough one, and it was made to be that way on purpose.

Last year the Rattlers gave up the district crown they won two years ago. They want it back. That’s one of the main objectives of the tough schedule that Sharyland cross country head coach Joe González has put together.

“The season was created as a tough season, and as a hard schedule,” said González. “We’ve been traveling a lot this year, from the Rio Grande Valley Classic to the UTSA Invitational. This week we travel to Corpus Christi. It’s been real tough and we haven’t had one easy meet.”
