Veterans Memorial High School’s football and basketball star player Kent Warren signed scholarship papers today (Thursday) with Valparaiso University. Although the star athlete will play football for the Valpo Crusaders, his scholarship is for his academic abilities, not his athletic skills. Warren is ranked third in his high school class academically. Math is one of his many strong suits, says the TMSEA two-time State Champion in individual calculator applications. He was also a member of the school’s UIL Calculator Applications team that won first in state. In football he was named to the All-District Team two years, while in basketball he was named to the All-Valley Team and twice to First Team All-District. He was also named to the Academic All-State Team for both football and basketball.

When Tuesday's game with La Joya ended, the ensuing celebration of Sharyland was, more than anything, a bit anti-climatic, a bit dull. Besides a couple high-fives and a team picture, the Rattlers treated their back-to-back-to-back district championship run as though it was just another game.

What’s the catch? This is only the beginning. District championships are nice, but now starts the real goal: another deep run in the playoffs.

Lady Rattlers get rematch with McHi

In terms of dominating District 30-5A, no one is doing a better job than the Sharyland girls. Scoring 42 goals while only giving up four the entire district season, JJ Lopez's team is wreaking havoc. In fact, entering district play, the team's goal was to compete well and then finish well. Ten games in with only two remaining, the Rattlers are closing in on a district championship.

Unfortunately, there was one hiccup up earlier in the year: the McHi Lady Bulldogs.

Flores Signs Football Scholarship

Veterans Memorial High School’s All State linebacker Randy Lee Flores, this week, signed to play football for Iowa Wesleyan College. Flores’ career highlights include First Team All State in the Associated Press poll, Second Team All State in the Texas Sports Association poll, and District Defensive Player of the Year. He also ranks in the top five in the state in total tackles.

It only takes a quick glance at the 30-5A boys soccer standings to know the Sharyland Rattlers have the district title all but wrapped up. At 10-0, no one is going to catch them.

Thus the intrigue turns to second place where the Mission Eagles are clinging to a three-point lead over Donna.

You will have to forgive Rudy Gonzalez if he looks a little bit over his normal weight. Indeed he may look a little heavier since the last time you saw him. Yes, forgive Mr. Gonzalez for indulging just a bit in a little fried chicken. He deserves it.

You see, the four-time 31-5A district champ just completed his outstanding career at Veterans Memorial by taking the Regional Championship followed by a third-place finish at the state meet for the 125 weight class. The finish was the best of any male qualifier from the Valley.
